Julio Salgado - Sept 1st, 1983:

Julio Salgado, a talented queer artist and activist, has made an indelible impact on the gay and LGBT community through his powerful artwork and unwavering advocacy. Born to immigrant parents and raised in a small town, Salgado's personal background has greatly influenced his art and activism. Struggling with his own identity and experiences as an undocumented immigrant, he found solace and empowerment in art as a means of self-expression and social change.

Through his captivating illustrations, Salgado highlights the struggles, resilience, and diversity within the LGBTQ+ community, using art as a tool to challenge societal norms and promote greater understanding and acceptance. He fearlessly addresses the intersectionality of LGBTQ+ issues and immigrant rights, shining a light on the unique challenges faced by queer individuals within the immigrant community.

Freddie Mercury - Sept 5th, 1946 - November 24th, 1991:

Freddie Mercury, the iconic frontman of the legendary band Queen, left an enduring impact on the gay and LGBT community. Born as Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar, Mercury's personal background of being of Parsi descent and growing up in a conservative society heavily influenced his life and music. As he embraced his identity as Freddie Mercury, he fearlessly shattered conventions, becoming a prominent gay icon and an inspiration to countless individuals struggling with their own identities.

Through his electrifying performances and powerful lyrics, Mercury's music became an anthem for self-expression and acceptance. His unapologetic presence on stage and in the media helped challenge stereotypes and break barriers, paving the way for greater visibility and understanding of the LGBT community.

Tragically, he passed away in 1991 due to complications from AIDS, sparking an even stronger call for awareness and compassion towards those affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Even in death, his legacy endures, as he continues to be celebrated as a cultural icon and a symbol of liberation for the gay and LGBT community worldwide.


 

Leslie Cheung - September 12th, 1956 - April 1st, 2003:

Born in 1956 in Hong Kong, Leslie Cheung's navigated the challenges of his sexuality in a conservative society, but his immense talent and charisma led him to achieve great success as an actor and singer.

With iconic roles in movies like "Farewell My Concubine" and "Happy Together," Cheung displayed his remarkable acting range and garnered international acclaim. His performances were authentic and groundbreaking, challenging traditional gender norms and stereotypes. Cheung's compelling portrayals of complex characters resonated deeply with audiences, and he became a beloved figure across cultures.

In 1997, Cheung fearlessly came out as gay, becoming one of the first openly gay public figures in Chinese entertainment. This courageous act significantly impacted the LGBT community, providing representation and inspiration for countless individuals. Tragically, his untimely death in 2003 brought attention to mental health issues within the community.


 

Jinkx Monsoon - September 18th, 1887:

Jinkx Monsoon, the stage name of Jerick Hoffer, is a drag performer, singer, and actor who has made a significant impact on the gay and LGBT community. Raised in a conservative family in Portland, Oregon, Hoffer discovered their passion for drag at a young age and adopted the persona of Jinkx Monsoon.

In 2013, Jinkx Monsoon rose to fame as the winner of "RuPaul's Drag Race" Season 5, showcasing their exceptional talent, wit, and charisma. Their victory on the show not only solidified their place as a drag superstar but also brought drag culture into mainstream consciousness, inspiring a new generation of LGBTQ+ artists and fans. More recently, Jinkx has been awarded the title "Queen of All Queens" by winning "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars - All Winners" and performing in the musical "Chicago" on Broadway. 

Beyond their drag performances, Jinkx Monsoon has used their platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and mental health awareness. They have openly shared their experiences as a gender non-conforming individual, fostering conversations about gender identity and acceptance.

 

 

Billy Porter - September 21st, 1969 

Born in 1969 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Billy Porter's career took off in the theater world, earning critical acclaim for his roles in musicals like "Kinky Boots" and "Angels in America." He starred in all three seasons of the series "Pose" and became the first gay black man to win in any lead action category at the Primetime Emmys. He was also included in Time's list of 100 most influential people in the world in 2020. 

Beyond the stage, Billy Porter's red carpet appearances and bold fashion choices have become a symbol of empowerment and self-expression for the LGBT community. His unapologetic approach to fashion challenges gender norms and celebrates individuality.
