A Historic Milestone for Equality

On Tuesday, June 18 2024, Thailand's senate passed the final reading of a marriage equality law, paving the way for the country to become the first in Southeast Asia to recognize same-sex couples. The senate upper house gave final approval—by 130 votes to four, with 18 abstentions—to changes in the marriage law allowing same-sex couples to tie the knot.

This decision not only provides legal recognition for same-sex couples but also grants them the same rights and protections as their heterosexual counterparts. It's a victory for equality, justice & human rights and it's a testament to the power of love to overcome prejudice and discrimination.

Thailand will become only the third place in Asia where same-sex couples can get hitched, following Taiwan and Nepal. Activists are hoping the first weddings could be celebrated as early as October 2024.

For years, LGBTQ2+ activists and allies in Thailand have tirelessly advocated for this change and their efforts have finally paid off. This victory is a tribute to their resilience, courage and unwavering belief in the power of love to bring about change.

The PM, who has been vocal in his support for the LGBTQ2+  community and the bill, will open his official residence to activists and supporters for celebrations later this month.
